2024-12-08

On December 7-8, the Arbitration and Mediation Center of Armenia (AMCA) organized a two-day training course for judges and lawyers from the Lori, Tavush, and Shirak regions. The purpose of the training was to introduce the professional community to alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, their practical application, and to deepen participants’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

At the opening of the course, AMCA Director Tatevik Matinyan emphasized the prospects for the development of the field in Armenia and presented the main areas of the Center’s work, as well as the nature and significance of arbitration and mediation. Particular attention was given to the practical application of alternative dispute resolution tools and to the role of lawyers in arbitration and mediation processes.

Presentations during the course were delivered by AMCA Deputy Director Lilit Petrosyan and Senior Lawyer Davit Khachatryan. Lilit Petrosyan addressed the nature of arbitration, its advantages and international practice, the requirements applicable to arbitration agreements and issues of their validity, as well as the setting aside, enforcement, and judicial support of arbitral awards and arbitral proceedings. Davit Khachatryan focused on the advantages of arbitration as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism, highlighting the importance of speed, flexibility, and impartiality. He also presented the significance of party consent, the specific features of selecting the arbitral tribunal and arbitrators, and the domestic and international procedures applied by AMCA.

The discussion also covered expedited dispute resolution procedures and the use of electronic solutions, which make participation possible from anywhere in the world. On the second day of the training, participants engaged in thematic discussions and practical exercises. The sessions addressed the nature of mediation, the institution of mandatory mediation, the role of the mediator, the specific features of the mediation procedure, as well as the Mediation Rules developed by the Center. A key part of the day was a simulation exercise, during which participants were able to test their skills in practice by acting as mediators and parties to mediation. At the conclusion of the training, participants had the opportunity to discuss practical scenarios, receive answers to professional questions, and exchange experience. They emphasized the high professional standard and practical value of the programme.
