Grant Hanessian is the President of the AMCA Arbitration Council.  Mr. Hanessian is an independent arbitrator in New York, specializing in international, investor-state and complex commercial disputes.  He is Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham Law School, where he teaches International Commercial Arbitration and the LL.M. International Arbitration Practicum, and he teaches International Investment Law and Arbitration in the LL.M. program at Yerevan State University. 

 

Prior to July 2020, Mr. Hanessian was a partner at Baker McKenzie, where he practiced for 33 years, and served as global co-head of the firm’s International Arbitration Practice, head of its International Arbitration Practice in North America and head of its New York office Litigation Department. Mr. Hanessian served as U.S. member of the ICC’s International Court of Arbitration in Paris from 2015 to 2021 and as chair of the Arbitration Committee of the U.S. Council for International Business (U.S. national committee of the ICC) and a member of the ICC’s Commission on Arbitration and its Task Forces on Arbitration and Financial Institutions and Arbitration Involving States or State Entities. 

 

Mr. Hanessian is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Dispute’s Panel of Arbitrators, the AAA-ICDR’s International Advisory Committee, Publications Committee and Advisory Committee on Brazil,  former Vice President (for U.S.) of the LCIA’s North American Users’ Council and founding board member of the New York International Arbitration Center.  He is a frequent speaker at arbitration conferences and law schools around the world.  He has written more than 40 articles and book chapters on international dispute resolution topics and served as editor or co-editor of The Leading Arbitrators’ Guide to International Arbitration (Juris, 4th ed.), ICDR Awards and Commentaries Vol. I and II (Juris),  International Arbitration Checklists (Juris, 3rd ed.), Gulf War Claims Reporter (ILI/Kluwer), Baker & McKenzie’s International Arbitration Yearbook and International Litigation & Arbitration Newsletter.
